The Arabic word وَٱضْرِبُوهُنَّ ۖۖtranslates best to "strike them." The word ضربه in Arabic did not mean to physically beat someone when that verse was written. You cannot apply modern definitions to ancient words. Strike meant something similar to going on a labor strike. In this case, you'd be on strike from your marriage by not interacting with your wife, sleeping with her, or having any type of relationship until she corrects herself.
